What We Actually Do

United Environmental Consulting Inc. is a specialized asbestos and mould testing, training and consulting firm. We work out of two branches — Saskatoon and Regina — and cover the entire province of Saskatchewan along with Northeast and Central Alberta, for homeowners pulling up old flooring and for contractors running an institutional site.

Here is the boundary, because it matters: we do not do the removal. Physically tearing the material out is the abatement contractor's job. We collect and identify the samples, write the assessment that tells that contractor what they are dealing with, monitor the air while the work is happening, and certify the space afterward. Our projects have run from a single sample off a basement ceiling to full assessments of schools, hospitals and mining operations, and we work directly with Occupational Health and Safety on how hazardous material gets managed.

The firm is run by its two partners — Desmond Slack in Regina and Jacob Laxdal in Saskatoon, with Jaamel Slack project-managing out of the Saskatoon office. Both partners hold NIOSH 582 Equivalency and Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) certification, and both spent years in management in this industry before UEC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't find your question? Give us a call (639) 638-3464

I'm renovating a 1970s house and I'm about to tear out the bathroom. Do I really need Regina asbestos testing before I start?

Yes — and it is far cheaper before than after. Materials made before the 1990s routinely contain asbestos, and the ones that catch people out are rarely the obvious pipe wrap: it is the drywall joint compound, the vinyl floor tile and the adhesive under it, the textured ceiling, the vermiculite in the attic. None of that is dangerous sitting still. It becomes dangerous the moment a reciprocating saw goes through it and the fibres go airborne through the whole house. We come out, take bulk samples of the suspect materials, send them to an accredited lab under Chain of Custody and give you a written result. If it comes back negative you demolish with a clear head; if it comes back positive you know exactly what needs an abatement contractor before anyone touches it.

Our crew hit something suspect mid-job and the site is stopped. How fast can someone get out here — and do you handle the removal too?

Call the branch closest to the site: Desmond at (639) 638-3464 for Regina and southern Saskatchewan, Jacob at (306) 250-5828 for Saskatoon and the north. We also cover Northeast and Central Alberta. We will tell you on the phone what to seal off and stop disturbing while we arrange attendance. On the second question: no, we do not do the removal. UEC is the independent consultant — we sample and identify, write the assessment, monitor the air during the abatement and run the clearance testing at the end. The physical removal is the abatement contractor's scope, and keeping those two roles separate is exactly what makes the clearance mean something.

What does asbestos testing cost, and what changes the price?

Price follows the number of samples and the size of the walk-through rather than a flat rate, which is why we would rather talk to you for two minutes than publish a figure that fits nobody. A homeowner sending us after one suspect material is a very different job from a full building assessment of a school or a commercial property, and air monitoring across a multi-day abatement is different again. Tell us the age of the building, what you are planning to disturb and roughly how many materials are in question, and we will give you a straight scope and price. Lab turnaround is part of that conversation too — if you are on a tight shutdown, say so up front.
